The "Belle City" Vanguard Junior Drill Team and Color Guard The Belle City Vanguard from Racine, WI were originally formed in May, 1961, as a competitive all-boy drill team of the Racine Junior Deputy Sheriff's League. In June, 1962, they became an independant, self-supporting all-boy drill team under the name of Belle City Vanguard, Inc. In December, 1962, an all-girl color guard was formed. The combined drill team and color guard had their first turnout together on April 28, 1963 at Hartland WI, for their annual Loyalty Day parade and competition where they won both the 1st place Junior Color Guard trophy and the 1st place Junior Drill Team trophy. The Boys drill team was very successful right from the start. During their first two seasons, 1961 and 1962, they entered thirteen competitions in addition to participating in numerous parades and exhibitions. They were able to bring home nine 1st place awards (including a State championship), three 2nd place awards and one 3rd place rating in national open drill team competition at the "Spectacle of Music" at South Milwaukee, WI. The Belle City Vanguard's boys drill team was short lived. By the middle 1960s they were gone, however the all-girl color guard of the Belle City Vanguard continued on for a few more years until they too disappeared sometime in the late 1960s. |
